HISTORY OF OUR PLACE

Giorgos ‘Vlahos’ was the founder of ‘Vlahiana’ built-up area. He was the chieftain of Daskalogiannis (the real name of Daskalogiannis was Ioannis ‘Vlahos’ because his grandfather was born and became rich in Moldovlahia)

The built-up area of ‘Vlahiana’ is situated in the south-west of Psiloritis Mountain. It is above Avgeniki village and it is 600m above sea level. In 1881 it is reported for the first time in the end-of-year census that ‘Vlahiana’ and ‘Kerasia’ belong to the municapility of Agios Myronas . The residents were 241 and all of them were Christians.

Daskalogiannis recruited men from Sfakia and Greek men from Vlahia where he was travelling. In March 25th 1770,in Sfakia, he became the leader of the revolution against the Turkish army. The fight was fierce and unequal; however he surrendered of his own free will. Then he was arrested and skinned alive in ‘Meitani’ of Heraklion-Crete.

There were eighty-two in his group and all of them were imprisoned in ‘Koules’ prison (Venetian fortress) by the Turkish pasha of Heraklion. Giorgis ‘Vlahos’ and his brother Nikos were among them.

Four years later, at Christmas day, the prisoners made an escape from Koules prison. 41 out of the 82 prisoners managed to escape (they jumped out of the windows of the fortress) and found shelter in Psiloritis Mountain. Giorgis ‘Vlahos’ was among them. The rest of them were killed in their attempt to jump out of the Venetian fortress. Giorgis ‘Vlahos’ and his brother Nikos were finally established above Avgeniki

Village and began building the area. They named it ‘Vlahiana’ in order to honor their country, Moldovlahia (Romania).

In ‘Vlahiana’ built-up area there is a temple of the archangels, Michelangelo and Gabriel, which was built in 1448 AD by the priest Michalis Marmaras. There is also an old fountain which was created by the Byzantine general Nikiforos Fokas. ‘Daskalogiannis’ manor-house is the oldest building in ‘Vlahiana’ built-up area and so you have feeling of its 200 years of history.

Giorgos Nikolaou Vlahakis wrote the history of this built-up area so as to be kept alive in memory and to honor the holy powers of the area.
